Hi Kelly, my name is Ashleigh Skelton I am a student in Dr. Strange’s EDM310 class at The University of South Alabama. I think that its so amazing that you are embracing all the enw technology thats out there. You are an amazing teacher. Having your students Skype is something that puts your students so much more head of other students. I know that I will most defiantly be using as much technology as possible in my future classroom.

Mrs. Hines Comment: The Sum of Parts
Over the past few weeks, I have been disconnected from my regular PLN (Personal Learning Network). For reasons that are difficult to explain, I had to bow out of an online chat group that holds many of my dearest colleagues, friends and greatest professional supporters. I knew my disconnect would be temporary, and I knew that I would miss this interaction. What I didn’t know was what we would all learn from it.
I think I can sum up what I learned by saying “The value of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” This seems contrary to the traditional phrase of a similar nature, but seems to fit more along the lines of real life. Have you ever noticed that you can eat way more of those mini-candy bars than you would if it were just one regular sized one? It’s the same idea. When I left my online group, even knowing that it would be temporary, I left a parting note that I hoped to continue conversations with each member of the group. The dysfunction seemed, at that time, to fall within the lurking and misinterpretation of the group as a whole. From the moment that I posted that note and left the group, I was inundated with emails, messages and other forms of contact from the same people that I interacted with daily. I was still in contact with many of the same people that enriched my personal and professional life, yet something wasn’t right. I was carrying on a series of meaningful, individual conversations, but there was no longer a group dynamic for me. I realized that the power of this group wasn’t in the individuals that composed it. It was in the collaboration that stemmed from the group interaction. The sum of each individual chat was less than the value of the whole group. To find the same value I was seeking, I wasn’t able to carry on conversations, no matter how meaningful, with individual members of my group. It has to be the whole, not just the sum of the parts.

Hello Mrs. Hines, my name is Ashleigh Skelton. I am in Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class at The University of South Alabama. This week I had to update my PLN as apart of class work for the EDM class. I love my PLN,it is so easy to use. I love having things that I use every single day at my finger tips. The PLN is so amazing, it makes life so much more easier for you when wonting to go to something fast. " Thats just my opinion".
In this class Dr. Strange has taught us so much about technology. He has encouraged us to use this new found technology. Which I would agree with him on that. The EDM class has opened my eyes to so much.
Final Report on PLN
This is a cropped screen shot of my final PLN. This project was so much fun for me. I loved having all of my favorite things just a click away. I really enjoyed making my PLN. My PLN is filled with so many different things. Some of the tabs that are on my PLN I use daily. Such as my blogger, g mail, facebook, twitter, Google, youtube, etc. I hope that I am able to show this to my future students. I think its an amazing tool to have at your finger tips.

Flaunt your Funny, Frivolous, Fabulous, Fads!
A fad is something that is very popular for a short time,
and fads can be a lot of fun! Fads often involve fashion, an activity, or some kind of toy or trinket.

So when I saw that it was time to write on your class blog I was a little afraid. So here goes nothing. I remember when I was growing up the cool thing that everyone had to have were Birkenstocks. If you don’t know what Birkenstocks are they are slip on shoes that are really amazing? But just a little price, but still everyone had a pair.
Mrs. Yollis, you are such and amazing teacher and your students are so lucky to have you as a teacher. Your explanation on the HTML was extremely helpful. I have really enjoyed reading your class blog. You have so many great ideas that I can not wait to use in my future class.

Last Wednesday, I went to a basketball game. The Los Angeles Clippers played against the Dallas Mavericks. When the first quarter ended the Clippers were winning 28-23. After the first half the Mavericks were winning 48-46. The Mavericks were winning 75-70 after the third quarter. The final score was Mavericks 106, Clippers 100. How many points did each team score in the third quarter? J.J Barea from the Mavericks scored 22 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, had 6 assists, and took away 2 steals. Blake Griffin from the Clippers scored 25 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, got 3 assists, and took away 3 steals.
My Comment:
I told Jared that it must have been so amazing to get to go to a Clippers game. I then told him about the time that I went to watch the Miami Heat play a game, Because LeBorn James is my favorite players. Jared had made comments about one day hoping to become a NBA player so I told him its important that he keeps up with all his school work and learns to balance basketball and school at the same time. I then said maybe one day the students of EDM 310 will see him on tv playing basketball for the Clippers

Blog Post # 14 Special Assignment on Metaphors
1. Why did you miss the metaphor in Tom Johnson's post, or, if you "hit the nail on the head", why do you think you understood the metaphor and why do you think that others in the class missed the metaphor?
Okay so I'm a little EMBARRASSED to say this but I had no idea what a Metaphor was. But when Dr. Strange pointed it out that half the class missed it and everyone started commenting on it. But after reading everyone's comments it started to come back to me slowly every slowly.
2. What metaphors have you encountered since I asked you to create a log of them?
Since you posted this special assignment , I started looking for things that involved a metaphor. There have only be a few things that I thought could possibly be a metaphor. But all in all there have been maybe two.
3. What other things can we do as educators to help our students to understand and to use metaphors?
I think that I would have my students write out the metaphor first. Then have them make a drawing of what there metaphor means to them. Then the person who is reading the metaphor would have something to look at and make the metaphor easier to understand.
4. Why do we use metaphors?
We use metaphors to help expand our way of thinking about things. When using a metaphor it requires your brain to think critically about the true meaning. Causing the reader to analyze what the true meaning is. Or at least that's why I think we use them.
